Bern is divided into 6 municipal districts (Stadtteile), each with its own character, history and community of residents.
The historic centre and UNESCO Old Town. Zytglogge, the Münster Cathedral, the Federal Palace, arcades and most of the museums.
The university quarter. A youthful atmosphere with cafés, bookshops, the University of Bern campus and the botanical garden.
A mixed residential area south of the centre. The Waisenhausplatz market, Dählhölzli park and Aare riverbanks for summer swimming.
The diplomatic and museum quarter. Historical Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Natural History Museum, and numerous embassies.
A lively northern district with a strong community feel. Breitenrainplatz market, the Lorraine Bridge and views over the Aare meander.
A western district with new developments and green spaces. Home to the planned new university research cluster.
Bern is a compact city where you can reach the historic centre from any district in 15–20 minutes by tram or bicycle.
Each district has its own residents' council (Quartierkommission), which works directly with the city administration on matters of urban development, transport and culture.
